NEW R&D PROJECT IN FUEL CELLS

PRADES I+D wishes to change, within the hybrid system of its aircraft, the current propulsion of its conventional fuel turbine for a 100% hydrogen propulsion. That is why it has thought of developing, together with the ICTP-CSIC Institute of Polymer Science and Technology in Madrid, a hydrogen purification reactor to integrate it as an on-board system in its different aircraft models.

This reactor together with a complete electrochemical system will take advantage of the aircraft’s energy remnants that come from the electrical generator located in the “hub” or rotor head (see figure), by taking advantage of the continuous rotation of the rotor disc driven by the following means:

  • Rotation impulse of the “tip jet” system by means of the compressed gases in the Hydrogen turbine.
  • By recovering the rotation energy stored in the disc, acting as an energy storage system (Flywheel).
  • By recovering the rotation energy of the disc in autorotation when it descends in a wing-rotating deceleration as a gyroplane.

In this way we manage to separate and generate energy with the aim of being self-efficient and carbon neutral.

In short, the project seeks to develop new polymeric materials as low-cost electrodes with low environmental impact, and to study the optimal way to use aircraft systems and surplus reusable energy.

The project has a duration of 3 years and is financed by the Community of Madrid, in the call for aid for the realization of industrial doctorates 2022. IND2022/AMB-23623.
